Book of Shadows Sweep No 1 Cate Tiernan Books

I purchased this book because it had been recommended to me from Amazon and from people on a LJ Smith listserver. I didn't expect too much from it, but I absolutely loved the entire series. I spent hours searching all the local bookstores trying to find the next books in the series after I devoured book by book.
They really are wonderful books. I liked them so much that I even started rereading the series not even a month after I finished them initially.
Wow.
The main character, Morgan, is a fantastic character. First of all, Cate Tiernan writes in first person, so you really feel connected to Morgan's thoughts and beliefs. She is also not really the "perfect teenagers" that I have encountered in other series. She is completely ordinary on the outside; she is smart, not drop-dead gorgeous, shy and insecure. Her life is completely ordinary, as well, until Cal enters her life.
The first book takes a look at how Morgan's life changes when Cal moves to Widow's Vale. He invites a bunch of people to a "party" one day a few weeks after he moves, and he introduces the crowd to Wicca. Some people leave, some people stay. Morgan feels drawn into this new religion. After her first circle, she feels a new power. She also realizes that she is drawn to Cal, but unfortunately her (beautiful) best friend Bree has already decided that she wants Cal.
But this book is not completely about Morgan's struggle to get a boyfriend. It is about Morgan's awakening. She states on the first page how her life changes after Cal moves to her town ("Years from now, I'll look back and remember today as the day I met him..."). Yet, this book does deal with real high school issues, and also real life issues. Tiernan does not try to create a "perfect world," but instead mirrors real life.
I definately suggest this series; it has already been added to one of my favorite series of all times.

Book of Shadows Sweep No 1 Cate Tiernan Books Reviews

I have to say that the whole world was so enchanting, fell in love with the way magic works right away. Story was compelling--I felt like I was in high school once more. Knocked off a star because it's a relatively short book for a relatively high price, it's gonna be an investment to finish the series, for sure. Can't wait to continue the series.
One of my favorite book series of all time - and I have read a ton of them.
One of my favorite books of all time.
I've been a long time fan of the Sweep series.

I first read it when I do believe still in high school ( I'm 31 now ). And I had given away all my paperback copies. So I'm purchasing the kindle versions.
This is a surprisingly great series. I'm on book 8 currently and just can't put them down. They all seem to be just as good as the first. And, by the way, I'm a grown up. These books can easily keep my attention as would they a thirteen year old. The only reason I gave it four and not five stars is because it's not 'epic'. Just really good. Lot's of non-cheesey plot twists, well-developed, real characters. My only negative comment is that they are really short books. So I'd get three at a time to be satisfied with the read-time. Having said that though, the author still manages to load these short books up with content.
I first came across this book at B&N but didnt have time to flip through it so I decided to it later. Well, I did and I ended up picking it up.

This book completely hooked me. I was curious to know who Cal was and what his intentions were. And I was curious to know how Morgan and Bree's friendship would turn out. I read this about a week before Halloween, so it was nice to know what the Wiccan ritual for Halloween was considering I'm very into Wicca. I didnt have any trouble relating to Morgan since I was pretty much in the same situation she was in. My mom is completely against me reading about Wicca and my best friend was well, being similar to Bree at the time.

I'm excited that this series has plenty more books in it and I'm excited to get started on reading the rest of them!
I first picked up book of shadows at the age of 12 fondly remembering a story of a young woman discovering her identity, her innate beauty and her place in the world. Back then I believed it was the most amazing thing I'd read; there was magic, and nature, an outcast who discovers she has powers beyond belief and of course the love of a gorgeous popular boy who she'd previously thought would never look twice at her.
Having read it again I know this book is not a work of amazing literature. It's entertaining, and for me still personally holds a special place in my heart (having been one of the first YA series I'd ever read). The storyline can move a bit slow, if you're looking for a book that is packed with magical action this is not the one for you. The book focuses on Morgan's discovery of who she is, of her connection with the earth and the power the earth holds. It tells the story of her struggle with her Catholic faith, her family and her inability to fit in at school.
Reading it again I felt the book can be preachy, especially in terms of tradition, religion and spirituality. So if you pick this book up make note that you will be encountering an entire series based upon Morgan's faith and connection to Wicca. Having already read the series once I skip over all the church scenes (trust there is a lot, the book gets monotonous and repetitive when it comes to describing Morgan's daily life; school, homework, church, Wicca--it literally goes like that in almost every chapter).
Its an easy ready, not heavy unless you yourself are having an issue with your faith or sense of identity. I think one of the best things about this book is how Morgan deals with her questioning of faith and her discovery of a spirituality she feels completely embodies her.
Because of the slow plot line and some scenes in the book which I felt didn't propel the book forward I'm giving the book a three star rating, deeply influenced by fondness of the series having read them in middle school.
