Portrait of a Protégé is the outstanding sequel to Portrait of a Girl Running. It definitely took me on an enjoyable ride that was filled with unexpected twists and turns. It may not seem like it to some (considering all that happens to Leila), but J.B. Chicoine was definitely thinking of her readers in this one. She provides a wonderfully quirky and amusing segment at the end of the book that gives us a glimpse inside her mind. Not many authors do that.Like Girl Running, Protégé is a novel that has many layers, and I cannot help but want more. I just love the way Chicoine expertly crafts the situations and characters, making them so realistic and relatable. The characters are just as in-depth and real as in Girl Running, and I could not help but miss them when I finished it. I will be waiting and hoping anxiously for a third book!

Portrait of a Protégé Portraits Volume 2 J B Chicoine 9780615891958 Books Reviews
After reading the first book I was dying to read this, and it was worth it! Chicoine really outdid herself in this book. I LOVED it! Many unanswered questions, so just awaiting the third one!!
In this second portion of a trilogy, my beloved character, Leila, having experienced a happy beginning to married life, is suddenly faced with overwhelming tragedy. How Leila moves on and makes life meaningful and fulfilling is just one of the several entertained plots in this insightful, highly readable novel. You just don’t want it to stop, which it doesn’t have to! So happy there is a third part to this trilogy.
This is the sequel to Portrait of a Girl Running, and if I had known what was going to happen to Leila in this book, well, I think I would have bought more Kleenex.
Chicoine has a mastery over words that I just can't fathom. She brings us into Leila's world with such depth and emotion that I swear I am right there in it. Again, Leila is in a constant state of change, with more tragedy to deal with, but also, a ray of hope that somehow she'll get through it and get to the other side. I couldn't help think that Leila had gone through a LOT of stuff already and now the author seemed to want to put her through the ringer once more -- I mean how much could this poor girl take -- but then I realized, real life has a tendency to do that as well. You get through one crisis, and then bam, another takes its place. So I could empathize with Leila on her journey, and hope and pray she would get the happy ending she finally deserved.
I'm not giving spoilers, but I do (honestly) recommend keeping a box of tissues handy. There are two scenes that had me sobbing like a baby. But that just says so much about the author and her way of getting into what really makes a great story. This book is a winner!
I'm not entirely sure how to review this book. On one hand, the writing is beautiful, emotional and everything that is should be. Seriously, the writing is lyrical, the characters so real and the reactions are so deep. I wonder if the author has training in anything to do with psychology, because she perfectly describes emotions and mental/emotional consequences to every act.
On the other hand, well, wow, this author certainly isn't afraid to go there, is she? There were some parts of the plot that seemed so… icky. I won't give any spoilers, but someone develops feelings for someone else, and it takes up a large portion of the book, and every time it was brought up, I just wanted to shout at the characters that that was sooooo wrong on so many levels.
Because I honestly wasn't sure where the author was going with this, well, there were some times that I didn't want to keep reading. Also, hasn't Leila suffered enough? I know it wouldn't make for an especially interesting sequel if nothing happened to her, but I kind of wanted to throw my protective arms around her and tell the author to stop being such a bully )
This book has been pegged as new adult, but I'd probably classify it as regular adult. It just seemed more mature to me. It deals with pretty adult topics, like death, cheating, and divorce, so it you're looking for a super happy book, this one is more contemplative and soul searching.
Honestly, my favorite book from this author is Uncharted. This one was probably my least favorite, simply because of the subject matter. The writing was still top notch and very engaging, but I really wanted to see Leila truly overcome some of her issues and get her happily ever after. There is resolution to this book, just not quite what I was wanting.
Continues to keep you guessing as to new twists in the life of Leila whom you meet in first Portrait book
This was an absolutely amazing story! I wish the author would consider writing more to allow us to see the heroine continue through her life! Never have I been so wrapped up in a story! Thank you!!
Loved this book more than the first...not because of any difference in writing, but because JB Chicoine really wraps up all the loose ends and questions I had after reading the first book. Chicoine makes the characters vulnerable and so real, it makes it very hard to put the book down! The chat between the author and the characters at the end is hysterical and I can imagine this conversation actually happening in most authors' heads!
