Strawberry Girl 60th Anniversary Edition Trophy Newbery Lois Lenski 9780064405850 Books

This book is the second book in a Regional series of books written by Lois Lenski in 1945. It was the intention to capture the life of families and girls in their day to day life in the early 20th Century. This specific book follows a family as they make a life for themselves in Central Florida. What I liked:

1. The Story: There's something about a simple story and the description of the simple lives of children. Lenski spends the time to describe a Hen and her chicks and then turn around in the same chapter and talk about the brutality of fire.

2. The illustrations: The book has about 30 illustrations through out the book and were all drawn by the author.

3. The message: As a Christian I was amazed (and encouraged) to see how the conflict is resolved in this book. You don't see books that have a strong Christian(or any other religion for that matter) find literary success, but this book does it, and does it well.

What I didn't like:

1. Ms. Lenski tried to be as authentic as she could with the telling of this book, down to the dialect the people spoke. It took some getting used to while reading, and while I appreciate her desire to be true to the people and the time, I think young readers will struggle with it today.

This would be a great book for 9-10 year old readers.

Lois Lenski is one of the true greats in the history of children's literature. Her books hold up through the years. This book is a delight that should please children of any age.
Read this to my kids out loud. It was challenging with the strong accent but fun nonetheless. Even my young teens enjoyed it. )
Many lessons to learn on being a good friend and neighbor even when the favor isn’t returned.
A touching, realistic tale of the power of neighborly love and kindness. The main character's personal account of learning to love and forgive neighbors who are very unlovable is challenging and relatable for children. Also, the Boyer family's "can do" spirit and hard work ethic is admirable. I read this to my second-grader and my other bigs and littles joined in on the read-aloud sessions with glee.
One of my daughters brought this book home and we read it out loud together when they were young. We all loved it! It is one family's story from the 1800's pioneer days in Florida - making a living growing crops and interacting with neighbors. It had been many years since I read it so I decided to buy it for my e-reader. I would have given it 10 stars if I could have because I thoroughly enjoyed it again.
Wanted to go back and read this to see why it was one of my favorite books growing up and remembering how much all of my children enjoyed it. Love how Lenski captured the area and people who were the early fruit growers and how they survived. No wonder it won the book awards. It is one of her best books, if not the best.
I read this aloud to my four kids (ages 5, 7, 9, 11) and we all really liked it. There are many lessons to take away from this book. Loving your enemy, perseverance, redemption. The book is not fluffy or sugar coated. There are parts that are hard to swallow (primarily in regards to the mean spiritedness of the neighbors) but how the family perseveres through tribulation is encouraging. I really love books written prior to the 50's because they are generally dependable in how they present parent/child interaction. The characters respect their parents (what a concept!) and they do as they are told.
I am doing the 2016 PopSugar reading challenge, and I chose this for a book based in my home state. I worked in the youth services department of a library for 6 years, so from time to time I enjoy picking up some juvenile fiction that I haven't read.Strawberry Girl is a classic, and I'm amazed that I haven't read it. It is set in Central Florida and centers around two families; one is a family who left Marion County, Florida to move a little further South - they have a sense of determination and enjoy self-sufficiency. However, their neighbors are living in poverty, largely due to the father's alcoholism. For a little bit, this short book got very heavy - but the end was really sweet and I really enjoyed it.
